All of us experience important life transitions, which can be a source of change that is good or bad, and emotions which are positive or negative. Regardless, adapting to life transitions is difficult, be it at any stage of life.

Life transitions can impact several domains of life, whether it’s our relationships, health, finances, or self-identity. 

These can look like:

  • Getting married or divorced

  • Ending a job or starting a new one

  • Becoming a parent

  • Children leaving home

  • Death of a loved one

  • Loss of friendships

  • Starting or graduating college

  • Retirement

  • Diagnosis of a serious illness

  • Experiencing a traumatic incident

  • Questioning one’s gender or sexual identity 

  • Changes in faith or religious beliefs 

  • COVID-19 and social distancing

Whether good or bad, change in any form can cause challenges in adapting to a new reality. This can impact our physical and mental health in various ways.

Most of the symptoms above combine to form what we call an adjustment disorder. Some people can develop an adjustment disorder if they persistently experience the negative impact of life transitions. 

While it is important to accept change as an inseparable and unavoidable part of our lives, it is also crucial to reach out for help when the going gets tough. It is possible to heal.
