Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a list of the most common questions we get asked.

How can counselling help me?

Counselling helps everyone in different ways, whether you’re looking to regain a sense of control in your life, discover your personal strengths, or heal, counselling can provide you with the support you need to work through what’s standing in your way.

Our experienced clinicians will create a safe place for you to explore your learned thoughts and behaviours, and through this process will offer insight, feedback, and clarification to help you identify what is holding you back from living your best life.

Counselling is an investment in yourself that can offer you anything from opportunities for personal development and growth, to help you heal, or just to help you break old habits.  Whatever your therapy goals are, we are here to help.

Contact us today so that we can match you with an appropriate clinician and arrange a free consultation to start your path to mental wellness.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

Yes - Most of our therapists offer in-person services at our Stratford location, and one day a week in Shakespeare. However, all clinicians at Reclaim & Rise Counselling offer virtual or telehealth therapy sessions. You can learn about whether or not a clinician offers in person sessions by clicking on their bio. Is virtual counselling as effective as in-person?

Yes - Online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy, with many added benefits such as increased accessibility, cost-effectiveness, and getting help from the comfort of your home. Read more about online counselling here.

How do I know which counsellor is right for me?

The fit between you and your therapist is one of the most important factors in determining how positive the outcome of your mental health treatment will be. Therefore, it’s important that you not only find someone who specializes in the areas that you need support but is also qualified and someone you feel comfortable with.

If you visit our “Meet Our Clinicians” page, you can view the different areas of specialization that each of our clinicians works with. However, if this seems daunting, please contact us and we will be happy to make recommendations based on your needs and goals for therapy.

How will I know if my treatment is working?

This is very different for every person. However, throughout therapy, you and your therapist will set goals and monitor your progress. If you are reaching these goals, however small, your treatment is likely working. Many of our clinicians make use of clinical measures to help track your progress in different areas throughout treatment.

Sometimes therapy can make things feel more uncomfortable or worse at the beginning, as issues are discussed and difficult feelings resurface. It is important to remember that healing isn’t linear and doesn’t happen overnight.

If you ever have concerns about the amount of progress you are making, speak with your clinician. They are here to help and support you on your journey and a part of that process is learning how to have open and honest conversations in a safe and trusting environment.

Can you diagnose me?

No - In Ontario only general practitioners (GPs or family doctors), psychiatrists and psychologists can give you an official mental health diagnosis.

Are your services covered by my benefits?

Most benefit packages include coverage for an RSW (Registered Social Worker), however please check with your benefits provider prior to your first session to determine whether or not you have coverage. Click here to learn more about our clinicians and their designations for insurance purposes.

Are your services covered by OHIP?

No - Therapy is only covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) when it is provided by a qualified GP or psychiatrist.

Are your services tax-deductible?

Yes - Counselling services provided by a Registered Social Worker (RSW) can be claimed as a medical expense when filing your income tax return since September 26, 2012. Registered Social Workers are considered “medical practitioners” for the purposes of claiming medical expenses on your tax return.

What if I can’t afford counselling?

For those who do not have benefits or insurance coverage, we created our “Rise Above Barriers Program” that can help to subsidize a portion of the cost of your session. Please email info@reclaimandrise.ca for more information about this program.

Also, most communities across Ontario have government funded counselling services provided through local community agencies. Although the wait times for these programs can be long, and some might have a cap on the number of sessions you can attend, they can be very helpful depending on your current financial situation.

Check in with your local social services department to see what services are available in your area.
