Strengths-Based Therapy

Reclaiming your power by uncovering your strengths and abilities.

What is Strengths-Based Therapy?

Strengths-based therapy is an evidence-based approach that greatly focuses on recognizing people’s strengths instead of their weaknesses. It cultivates a positive mindset by helping you to recognize your ability to make meaningful changes and adopt healthy behaviours.

Several forms of therapy make use of strengths-based techniques. Some of them include:

Techniques Used in Strengths-Based Therapy

Strengths-based therapy uses a variety of techniques which make it an effective counselling approach.

Identifying strengths

The counsellor first helps you to identify any strengths you think you have. This is done by giving you a list of different strengths from which you’ll be asked to choose the ones that apply. Then, the counsellor will ask you questions that will allow you to reflect on other self-perceived strengths.

Shifting perspectives

A key part of the strength-focused approach is learning to transform your weaknesses into your strengths. Something that you think is a weakness, might actually be a strength depending on how you use it. Your counsellor will help you to reframe these weaknesses, which can improve your self-esteem.

Building a strength-oriented mindset

You’ll be asked to keep a track of your strengths and situations where these strengths helped you. This can be done through journaling. The more you keep track, the better you’ll be able to notice these strengths in yourself.

Utilizing strengths

Your counsellor will ask you questions which can help you see the ways in which a strength benefits you, and when. This can give you a chance to reflect on the role of that strength and learn how and when to use it to get the most out of it.

Recognizing others’ strengths

An important part of fostering healthy relationships is learning to acknowledge and validate other people’s strengths. Your counsellor will help you to discover ways that can make you mindful of positive behaviours in other people.

Strengths-based therapy can help you to become resilient, develop a positive outlook, and see yourself as a survivor instead of a victim.
